Intermodal Train Derailment – Commonwealth Railway in Suffolk

May 8, 2018

As you may be aware, an intermodal train, operated by Commonwealth Railway, derailed in Suffolk on Monday afternoon, May 7.  No injuries were reported and no hazardous cargoes were involved.

The derailment, which occurred approximately eight miles west of the port, on track owned and operated by Commonwealth Railway, involved an outbound shuttle train that originated at Virginia International Gateway (VIG).  The train consisted of a large number of empty rails cars, with fewer than 100 ocean containers onboard (import loads and empties).

We are in close communication with representatives of the Commonwealth Railway, CSX and Norfolk Southern regarding service restoration efforts.  A Commonwealth Railway derailment crew is on the scene in Suffolk this morning, May 8.  Preliminary reports call for track repair and service restoration to be completed as early as Wednesday, May 9.

Our Sales Team is closely monitoring this situation and is prepared to communicate with affected customers, as required.
