Planning for a Changing World

Preparing for the Next Wave of Growth

The next chapter is about building on the strong foundation we’ve put in place. As cargo volumes grow and supply chains shift, we’re making targeted investments that expand capacity, strengthen connectivity, and position Virginia for decades of continued growth.

Expanding North Norfolk International Terminal

The North NIT expansion will add 1.4 million TEUs of annual capacity and a fifth ultra-large container vessel berth, creating room for increased cargo volumes while ensuring efficient operations for the world’s largest container ships.

Unlocking additional terminal capacity

Investments at Pinners Point Container Yard are improving efficiency for empty containers and chassis storage, freeing up capacity at marine terminals to accommodate an additional 1 million loaded TEUs, without expanding our existing footprint.

Identifying a capacity bridge to the future

As offshore wind activity evolves, Portsmouth Marine Terminal provides the flexibility to meet future demand. With the potential to accommodate an additional 1.6 million TEUs of container capacity, the terminal is one of Virginia’s most significant long-term opportunities for growth.
